The thinking behind Lyra: designing a nursing chair that asks less of you

Lyra, in Biscuit BoucléOur first electric nursing chair: silent recline, a gentle glide and a full 360° swivel.

There is a particular kind of tired that only new parents know. It is 3am, you are in the chair again, and the house is very quiet. Whatever you are sitting in matters more in that moment than almost anything else in the home.

That moment is where Lyra began. Before we thought about fabric or colour, we asked a simpler question: what does a nursing chair need to do for you when you have a baby in your arms and nothing left in the tank?

A good nursing chair should ask less of you, not more.

The brief

Four things we wanted Lyra to do

Most nursing chairs get one or two of these right. Lyra was designed around all four.

01

Recline without effort

Lyra reclines at the touch of a button, silently, and stops wherever you want it, even while you are holding your baby. There is no lever to pull and no footrest to force closed.

02

Move with you

A gentle glide and a full 360° swivel on a real wood base help you move naturally through feeds and settling, and turn towards the cot without getting up.

03

Support where it counts

A high supportive back, curved side headrests, deep cushioning and padded armrests set at feeding height, for long feeds and the nights you doze off mid-feed.

04

Think of 3am

USB and USB-C charging built into the arm keeps your phone within reach, and the armrest covers come off for washing, because milk will find them.

The early weeks

When everyday movement takes more out of you

In the first weeks after birth, simple movements can feel like hard work. Lyra's recline and footrest move for you, so getting comfortable, and getting up again, asks far less of your body.

That is the reason Lyra is electric. It was never about adding features. It was about taking effort away at the time you have the least to spare.

Made to stay

Designed to last beyond the nursery

We wanted a chair you would happily keep once the night feeds end. Lyra sits on a real wood base with a clean, contemporary silhouette, finished in a soft, breathable bouclé that flatters its curves. It looks at home in the nursery today and the living room later.

It comes in two colours chosen to sit quietly in a warm, natural room: Oat and Biscuit Bouclé.

Questions parents ask

Lyra FAQs

Is Lyra a glider, a rocker or a recliner?

Lyra is an electric recliner with a gentle glide and a full 360° swivel. It reclines at the touch of a button and stops wherever you want it. If you would prefer a traditional rocking motion, our Serena Rocking Chair is the one to look at.

Can I recline Lyra while I am holding my baby?

Yes. Recline and return are controlled by a button, so there is no lever to pull or footrest to push closed, and Lyra stops at any point along the way.

Does Lyra need to be plugged in?

Yes, it needs a power point within reach to recline. Plan its spot in the nursery with that in mind.

How big is Lyra?

Lyra measures H 103 × W 75 cm, with a seat W 54 × H 52 cm. The maximum user weight is 130 kg.

How do I keep it clean?

The armrest covers are removable for washing, which helps with the everyday marks that come with feeding. For the upholstery itself, follow the care details on the product page.

What warranty does Lyra have?

Lyra has a two year warranty on both the chair and the motor.

Will Lyra suit a room after the nursery years?

That was the intention. With its real wood base and clean, contemporary shape, Lyra is designed to move to a living room or bedroom once the night feeds are behind you.
