Solid Wood Nursery Furniture: Why Materials Matter

When you're choosing nursery furniture, it's easy to focus on colour and style first. But the material underneath the finish is what actually determines how long a piece lasts, and what it releases into the air your baby breathes.

At Gaia Baby, every range is built from solid, sustainably sourced timber: New Zealand pine on Eos, natural ash and walnut on Hera, and solid birch on Serena. None of it is MDF, particleboard or any other engineered composite board.

Why solid timber, not composite board?

Composite boards like MDF and particleboard are made from wood fibres or particles bonded together with resin, often a formaldehyde-based glue. Under heat, humidity or general wear, that resin can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the room.

Solid timber has no bonding resin to off-gas in the first place. It's also simply stronger: a cot bed built from a single piece of pine, ash or birch can carry the repeated stress of being climbed on, leaned against and converted between configurations for years, without the swelling or crumbling that composite boards are prone to near moisture.

What this looks like across our ranges

Eos uses A-grade New Zealand pine with a water-based, chemical-free paint finish, and ships in two compact, plastic-free cartons.

Hera is built from 100% natural ash sourced from FSC-certified forests, with walnut A-frame accents, using eco-wood construction and VOC- and formaldehyde-free paints and varnishes. It's also fully recyclable and biodegradable at the end of its life.

Serena is solid birch, finished smooth and splinter-free on every curve and edge.

The finish matters as much as the frame

A solid timber frame with a solvent-based lacquer would defeat the purpose. Every Gaia Baby finish is a water-based paint or varnish, independently tested against Australian safety standards, so the timber underneath stays the safest part of the piece, not just the least visible.
