What Does Low-VOC Nursery Furniture Mean?
VOC stands for volatile organic compound — a class of chemicals that evaporate at room temperature. In furniture, they mainly come from two places: the resin bonding composite board together, and solvent-based paints, stains and lacquers.
"Low-VOC" simply means a product has been formulated to minimise both sources.
Why it matters more in a nursery
A nursery is usually a small, enclosed room where a baby spends a large share of their day, often with the door closed and less air exchange than the rest of the house. Whatever a piece of furniture releases into that air has less room to dilute.
How Gaia Baby keeps VOCs low
Two things happen together across every range:
- No composite board. Eos, Hera and Serena are all solid timber — New Zealand pine, ash and walnut, and birch — so there's no resin-bonded MDF or particleboard to off-gas in the first place.
- Water-based finishes. Every paint and varnish across our ranges is water-based rather than solvent-based. Hera specifically uses VOC- and formaldehyde-free paints and varnishes on its ash and walnut frame.
The Eos Cot Bed goes a step further on the finish itself, using a chemical-free paint on its A-grade New Zealand pine frame.
It's tested, not just claimed
Low-VOC claims are only meaningful if they're independently verified. Our cot mattress carries GECA certification (Good Environmental Choice Australia), and our cot beds are independently tested and certified to Australia's Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard, Consumer Goods (Infant Products) Information Standard, AS/NZS 2172:2013 and AS/NZS ISO 8124.3:2021+Amd 1:2023, and are INPAA Approved.
